Garage and home security tips from Queensland Police.

As more and more residential units appear in our communities, it is important to ensure you maintain good security habits as poor habits can put the whole building at risk.

Garages and vehicles can become common targets for opportunistic thieves if they come across an open door which can give easy access to vehicles and other property stored in the garage.

Crime prevention officers have the following tips to help prevent opportunistic crime:

  • Always keep your garage or shed door closed and locked;
  • Avoid storing excess belongings in garage areas;
  • Ensure all property is secured if left unattended;
  • Check the garage door closes completely so potential car thieves can’t sneak in;
  • Remove valuables and garage remotes from your vehicle; and
  • Be aware of any suspicious activity near the entrance and contact police immediately if you witness anything suspicious.

Here are some questions to ask yourself for your own home security audit:

  • Are your security doors in good working order with locks installed?
  • Do you keep visitors under supervision in communal areas?
  • Do you have keyed access to communal areas?
  • Is your balcony secure?
  • Is your entry and exit areas well lit?

If you would like police to conduct a free security assessment of your residential building and help you answer the questions above, contact your local police station to arrange a Crime Prevention Officer to assist.
